We offer bachelor degrees in mathematics and statistics including applied mathematics (with a variety of emphases), data science, actuarial science, and teaching. We offer master's degrees in mathematics (with orientations to pure, applied, or teaching service), and master of science degrees in statistics and biostatistics. Department faculty are also active in joint doctoral programs in mathematics and science education, and computational sciences. A new certificate program in data science through SDSU's World Campus will be begin in Fall 2020.

Department faculty are active in a variety of research areas, pure and applied. We enjoy incorporating students into our research and we include independent learning into our courses. The department prepares students for a wide range of career paths including actuarial and data science, engineering, climate analysis, biotechnology, business and education. The careful analysis required to study mathematics and statistics and the computational experience that we include in our courses are highly valued by employers. Our students go on to rewarding careers of tremendous variety. Students can work as tutors in the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center, as instructional aides in our precalculus course and as homework graders for a variety of courses. Graduate students may be employed as teaching assistants in calculus, introductory statistics, and some additional courses.

Several of SDSU's most prominent interdisciplinary programs were founded by members of the department, and our faculty continue to play leading roles in them.
